Where to start

Presuming that you have sorted your accommodation before coming to Canada, furnishing your home will be your biggest priority.

Most people start off at Walmart or The real Canadian Superstore as these stores carry most of the essential items; kitchen equipment, basic furniture. Bedding, television etc.. There are lots of stores in the mall’s in Saskatoon as well, but Walmart and Canadian Superstore tend to be the cheapest. Who those who prefer department store shopping, Saskatoon has two large department stores in the town centre.

Saskatoon offers a wide variety of furniture stores all varying in price and quality. If you want to start at the bottom, then there is web site where you can buy second hand furniture and other items. For those who want to buying everything new, then take your time to look around. Most stores carry similar products, but the price will vary considerably. A lot of people opt to either find accommodation which is furnished or they buy the essential items of furniture second hand until they have had a chance to look around. For those people on the assistance program, a list of stores will be provided.
TV, Internet & Mobile Phones

Once you have something to sleep on, the next priority is cable TV, telephone and internet connection. There are no TV ariel’s connected in homes, everyone in Canada has cable TV, as there are only 4 free channels in Canada and one of those is French.

There are two companies in Saskatoon that offer cable TV, telephone and internet connection, Sasktel and Shaw. Its personal choice which provider you choose. For most, a telephone connection is vital to let loved ones in the UK know you arrived safely. This can normally be set up within 24 hours.

In the mean time, most people bring their UK DVD’s with them and buy a multi-region DVD player, which cost around $30. As for the internet, there are many places that have free wifi or you can use the internet cafe’s in the mall’s, they are quite cheap and have a nice atmosphere with coffee on tap.

As for mobile phones, these can be expensive as you have to pay for incoming and outgoing calls. Most contract phone companies require a security deposit from you, which can be anywhere from $100-$500 per handset unless you wait six months to start a credit history. If you want a mobile phone but don’t want to pay a deposit, we suggest you purchase a pay as you go phone, most of the large companies do these: Virgin, Telus, Fido.
